DREAMFISH LOOKING FOR LOCAL PARTNERS  Comments

As I am searching for local partners for Dreamfish with resonant philosophies of collaborative learning and work, i came across a cool project, Hole-in-the-Wall Education. While the project is for children and so may not be a likely partner candidate for us, it is a great case of collaborative learning. It also offers a well-researched example of the kind of connective learning for adults that we aim to cultivate in the Dreamfish community in our practices, service learning, peer groups, and the design of our technology.

Hole-in-the-Wall Education is a project in which children in low-income areas of India and Cambodia use a computer and playful social interaction to learn, as opposed to formal top-down education. The children have not had prior experience with computers, but rather learn as they practice and interact with each other.— Children, who are “connectors”, help children to connect in order to learn.

The impact is increased learning of Math and English, social skills, computer skills, decrease of school dropouts,

The project coined the term, “Minimally Invasive Education”: http://www.hole-in-the-wall.com/MIE.html

Peer-to-Peer learning patterns
“The sociometric survey found

‚Ä¢—— —Self-organizing groups of children who organize themselves into Leaders (experts), Connectors and Novice groups.
‚Ä¢—— —Leaders and Connectors identified seem to display an ability to connect with and teach other users.
‚Ä¢ Key leaders on receiving targeted intervention, play a key role in bringing about a “multiplier effect in learning” within the community.
‚Ä¢ Often girls are seen to take on the role of Connector, who initiates younger children and siblings (usually novices with little or no exposure to computers) and connects them to the leaders in the group.”
